One of the things that I love most about living in Mount Pleasant is that the people here are so nice and neighborly. Of course, I know moving into a new place with new neighbors can be a bit scary (in a good way). Kind of like your first day of school or work in a new place. But it can be endlessly beneficial to have a strong relationship with your neighbors! Luckily, when you have Mount Pleasant neighbors they will likely make it pretty easy to build a warm and positive relationship. But just to be sure, I wanted to take this opportunity to share some easy and actionable tips to ensure you get off on the right foot with your new neighbors.
Get Involved In Your Kid’s School
One of the best ways to make some new friends and get to know the people of your community is to get involved in your kids’ schools. Depending on how much time you have to spare you could become a member of the PTA or at least speak to their teachers to see if there are ways you can get more involved. Attending school events puts you in an environment where you and the other parents share a common goal; an excellent foundation for friendship.
Drop Off An Introductory Gift
For those neighbors right next door or across the street, it is always well-advised to drop by to introduce yourself and offer a gift. I know it is more traditional for the existing neighbors to welcome you with a gift, this will show them that you are friendly and generous people that they can be grateful to have living nearby. Be sure to include a friendly note with the gift just in case they aren’t next door. Plus it will be helpful to have your names for easy reference until they can remember them.
Invite Them To The Housewarming Party
If you are planning on hosting a housewarming party, it is always a good idea to invite the neighbors. Not only will this help prevent them from getting upset by all of the extra traffic on the street or extra noise but it is an easy way to begin socializing with them. I understand it can be a bit awkward when you are getting to know your new neighbors but this presents a casual way for them to get to know you at a mutual comfort level.
Spend Some Time Outside
Another simple step you can take is to start spending more time outside. Sitting outside, gardening, or playing with the kids makes it easier for neighbors arriving and leaving to say hello. It also presents the opportunity for other earby neighbors to say hello and introduce themselves without having to be as forward as knocking on the door.
